Although unlikely to break records set before the pandemic, Swiss airports are expecting a busy weekend, as the Easter holidays start. The country's two largest airports have predicted that 120.000 people will be travelling through their doors every day.

Queues and disruption predicted in Geneva and Zurich over Easter

Much like the disruption predicted on Swiss roads, Cointrin Airport in Geneva said that it expects 50.000 passengers every day during the Easter and school holidays. This amounts to 85 percent of the passenger numbers seen in 2019. As COVID restrictions are phased out, many are choosing to return to the skies and go on holiday abroad.

In Zurich Airport, the largest in the country, authorities are expecting 70.000 people to show up for flights every single day between Maundy Thursday and Easter Monday. However, the numbers at Swiss airports are still below pre-pandemic levels, with a spokesperson saying Geneva Airport only expected normal traffic to resume by 2025.

Top destinations from Zurich and Geneva revealed

According to Geneva Airport, the top three destinations for an Easter weekend are London, Porto and Lisbon. The British capital has come back to claim the top spot in 2022, after it was beaten by Porto in 2021.

Among some of the other favourites are restarted services to Paris and Amsterdam. In terms of long-haul destinations, Turkey, Egypt and the islands of Greece are expected to be very popular as the summer gets going.
