Basel EuroAirport has announced that it welcomed a record number of passengers this summer. August 8, 2025, saw the highest-ever number of passengers recorded in a single day.

Record passenger numbers at Basel EuroAirport

The school summer holiday season is always busy for airports, but passenger numbers hit unprecedented heights at Basel EuroAirport in summer 2025. Over 2,4 million travellers flew via Basel EuroAirport during the school summer holidays, typically July and August, the airport reported in a press release.

This was a 9 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The EuroAirport school summer holiday season tends to run longer than at other airports because it serves three countries with varying school holidays: Switzerland, France and Germany

August alone saw 1,01 million passengers travel through the airport. Switzerland hosted the UEFA Women’s Championship in July, with games played in Basel and many Swiss cities, which could have contributed to higher numbers. Zurich Airport also broke two passenger records in July 2025.

The total number of summer-month passengers wasn’t the only record broken in 2025; Basel EuroAirport also recorded the highest-ever number of passengers on a single day on August 8, with 36.802 passengers.

Basel EuroAirport is making improvements

Airport operations “ran smoothly” despite delays caused by summer thunderstorms and European air traffic control providers, the airport reported. The most popular destinations for travellers using the airport were travel hotspots in the Mediterranean, such as Spain, Portugal and Greece.

Last year, Basel Airport announced that it was introducing measures to help streamline operations. This included new fixed take-off and landing time slots and introducing the ECRA (European Connected Regional Airports) procedure, which allows real-time data exchange with other airports. These improvements “contributed to stabilising traffic flows and improving operational quality for passengers”, continued the EuroAirport statement.

In March, EuroAirport announced plans to nearly double in size over the next five years. Alongside the current 15.000-square-metre terminal, an additional 14.000-square-metre building will be constructed. Work is expected to begin in 2027.
