UNCTAD Internship in the Division on International Trade and Commodities

This Internship position is in the Sustainable Ocean and Blue Economy Programme, at the Trade, Environment, Climate Change and Sustainable Development Branch, Division on International Trade and Commodities (DITC). The Oceans and Blue Economy Programme carries out analytical and capacity-building activities aimed at supporting developing countries to leverage the sustainable development opportunities offered by the oceans economy while building resilience and addressing climate change.

Under the supervision of the Project Officer, duties may include but are not limited to:

Economic/legal/political analysis:

• Prepares briefing notes, inputs to speeches, PowerPoint presentations, flyers and other communication material on oceans economy, trade, fisheries and seaweed aquaculture, coastal and marine tourism and climate change.
• Prepares data inputs for analytical studies and research related to oceans/blue economy, trade, fisheries and seaweed aquaculture, coastal and marine tourism and climate change, particularly in SIDS.
• Prepares short news items and articles on relevant projects and activities by the Oceans Economy and Fisheries Programme.
• Provide quick policy, economic and legal analysis and advice on the interphase between, trade, the sustainable ocean and circular economy and environmental sustainability.

Meeting and communications support:

• Support preparations for UNCTAD’s Sustainble Ocean and Blue Economy Programme events and trainings, including SDG14 related sessions and stakeholder coordination.
• Follows UNCTAD, UN oceans-related intergovernmental, UN INC Plastic negotiations, WTO fisheries Subsidies and United Nations Global Seaweed Initiative (UNGSI) meetings and prepares minutes, summary reports, list of participants, evaluation forms and similar material.
• Assists in the preparation and organization of the 6th UN Ocean Forum and servicing of online trainings, seminars, panels, etc.
• Prepare news items and social media posts on ocean-related matters.
• Help translate complex technical and policy content into accessible language for diverse stakeholder groups.

Technical cooperation/Capacity building:

• Compiles and analyses regulatory trends, trade and environmental data and other information necessary for the preparation of technical cooperation project proposals, reports and fundraising activities.
• Participates in the development and supports the delivery of training and related materials on trade and environment, oceans economy, trade, fisheries and aquaculture, seabed mining and climate change.

General:

• Performs other related duties as required for the final delivery of the workplan of the Trade, Environment, Climate Change and Sustainable Development Branch of DITC.
• Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities (if available during the internship).

The United Nations internship programme is intended to expose students or recent graduates to the United Nations in order to enhance their educational experience and to help them to gain experience in the work of the Organization. Therefore, applicants to the programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

• Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
• Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).

Moreover, interns should:

• Should be computer literate in standard software applications;
• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Applicants must preferably pursue studies in economics, environmental studies, international relations, international organizations, or political sciences.

Fluency oral and written in English is required. Knowledge of French, Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese is an advantage.
