The 2026 Winter Olympics have officially wrapped in Milan, Italy and Switzerland has set a new medal record, returning home with 23 medals and in eighth place.
Switzerland returns home with record number of Olympic medals
Winter sports and Olympic Games fans have been glued to the TV watching the 2026 Milano Cortina Games, which took place from February 6 to February 22.
The 2026 Winter Olympics will “go down in history” as Switzerland won 23 medals and set a new record, reports Blue News. The previous record was 15 medals, set at Calgary in 1988, South Korea in 2018 and Beijing in 2022. 2026 also saw a record number of medals up for grabs compared to previous years.
In total, Switzerland won six gold medals, nine silver and eight bronze. Perhaps unsurprisingly for a country where skiing is a weekend pastime in winter, Switzerland won the most medals in alpine skiing (four gold, three silver and two bronze). 2026 also saw the introduction of Ski Mountaineering, in which Switzerland won its first gold medal.
Norway crowned 2026 Winter Olympics winner
Norway once again took first place with a total of 41 medals and broke its record of 16 gold medals by winning 18 this year. The US came in second place with 33 medals and the Netherlands took third place with 20 medals.
Looking ahead, the next Winter Olympics will be hosted in neighbouring France from February 1 to February 17, 2030. The 2034 Winter Olympics are set to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Switzerland is currently in a “privileged dialogue” with the International Olympic Committee and has until the end of 2027 to finalise its application to host the 2038 games. So far, 10 Swiss cities have been chosen to host various events.
