A Swiss woman has been fined 150 Swiss francs and banned from a Coop store for two years because she forgot to scan and pay for a Gipfeli.
Women forgets to scan Gipfeli at Coop
Julia Steiner, a comedian from Lucerne, has shared her experience in an Instagram video of a shopping mishap at the popular Swiss supermarket Coop. Steiner went about her weekly shop using a self-scanner and paid 175 francs for the groceries she had bought.
But when leaving, a security guard took Steiner to a back room where she was issued a 150 Swiss franc fine and a two-year ban from the Coop store for not entering and paying for her Gipfeli (Swiss croissant) at the self-service checkout.
“Unfortunately, that’s the procedure,” commented the security guard in Steiner’s recollection of the incident. “Do they really think I’d pay 175 francs just to steal a Gipfeli?” asked the comedian, according to Nau.
Two-year ban only applies to one store
Social media users commented that the punishment was an “exaggerated reaction” by Coop, while others joked that Steiner will now have to shop at Migros instead. Luckily for her, the two-year ban only applies to the store where the incident took place.
Indeed, this was not the first time such an incident has happened in Switzerland. According to Nau, in 2025, an Aldi customer also forgot to scan and pay for a pastry item and ended up with a bill of 600 Swiss francs.
