SWISS unveils new business & senator lounges in Zurich for 2027

Expats taking a trip back home to visit family, as well as anyone travelling to or from Switzerland for work or a holiday, can look forward to brand-new SWISS business class and senator lounges at Zurich Airport.

As Switzerland’s largest and busiest transport hub, Zurich Airport is already home to nine lounges that travellers can use to make the most of their journeys. Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has confirmed in a press release that it will open the doors to new lounges in the first quarter of 2027.

The renovation is part of the ongoing Zurich Airport Dock A replacement project, with the two lounges to be located in a new building on the south side of Dock B. 

Covering 2.600 square metres in total, the SWISS business and senator lounges will feature around 20 percent more space than the current ones, and will offer extra places to work and relax. In true Swiss style, the new area will entice guests with “panoramic views of the apron and the Alps.”

“With the new lounges, we are specifically investing in our guests’ travel experience at our home airport in Zurich,” said Heike Birlenbach, chief customer officer at SWISS.

Flight delays and heavy traffic challenge Zurich Airport and SWISS

While future upgrades are ongoing, excessively hot weather this summer gave way to dramatic thunderstorms that disrupted flight operations. Combined with airspace restrictions, geopolitical conflicts, and high travel demand, these factors created “challenging operating conditions” for both the airport and the airline. 

Despite the hurdles, “flight operations were kept largely stable and resilient” throughout the busy 2026 summer season, explained SWISS. A total of 3,334.827 travellers visited Zurich Airport in July this year, a 2,4 percent increase year-on-year. The busiest day of the summer period fell the day after Swiss National Day, on Sunday, August 2, when 121.981 passengers travelled through the airport.

While airport punctuality saw a 5 percentage point improvement year-on-year to 56 percent, SWISS experienced “more flight diversions and cancellations than it had last year” just during the summer period. 

“This summer tested us all to the limits,” commented SWISS chief operating officer Oliver Buchhofer. “Our people and our partners really helped us get through it,” he added, while also mentioning that the punctuality performance and operating stability “are just not what we aim to achieve.”
