Several flights in and out of Zurich Airport are cancelled on Friday as Airline Assistance Switzerland (AAS) ground staff go on strike.
Zurich Airport workers to strike at 2pm
17 flights in and out of Zurich Airport will be cancelled on Friday, August 22. Flights operated by Eurowings, Chair, LOT, Pegasus, Air Serbia, GP Aviation, Air Cairo and Air Montenegro will be affected when ground staff begin a warning strike at 2pm.
Since the majority of the ground staff working at Zurich Airport are employed through Swissport, most flights scheduled for the day will operate as normal. Passengers are advised to check with their airline if their flight will go ahead.
220 AAS staff strike against mass layoffs
The 220 AAS ground staff going on strike are doing so to protest mass layoffs at the international company. AAS recently lost one of its major customers, and one of its operating licences is due to expire.
The VPOD air traffic union has drawn up and submitted an alternative plan to AAS, but the union has yet to receive a response. The AAS Group currently employs around 3.000 people at airports across Europe, including Mallorca and Vienna.
