Hot and humid summer weather to grip Switzerland this week

After a shaky start to August, summer in Switzerland is now here to stay! The weather is expected to be hot and sunny for the entirety of this week, although there will be some thunderstorms waiting in the wings.

Summer weather is here to stay

After a series of cold and wet days over the last few weeks, Switzerland was finally treated to something resembling summer last weekend. Now, SRF Meteo has predicted that the weather will be decidedly tropical for the entirety of this week, with high temperatures expected to be coupled with even higher humidity.

Meteorologists explained that the high temperatures are thanks to a wave of hot, humid air from Spain - wind in Valencia meant that the city broke temperature records, with the mercury climbing to 46,8 degrees celsius in recent days.

Mediterranean-like weather forecast in Switzerland

While it won’t be that hot, temperatures in Switzerland will still rise and hover around 30 degrees for the entirety of this week. This is rather unfortunate timing, given that the Swiss school holidays ended in many cantons on August 14, meaning students will have to enjoy the lovely weather from indoors...

The Mediterranean-like conditions will peak at the weekend, with Basel, Zurich, Geneva and Lausanne seeing temperatures as high as 34 degrees! Luckily for the sweating residents of the alpine nation, water temperatures across the country will climb significantly in the next few days, meaning a dip in the lake or river will be all the more inviting.

Heavy thunderstorms to open scorching week in Switzerland

However, before we start renaming places to Costa del Solothurn, Hvarau and Barcalausanne, SRF Meteo warned that there is still a significant chance of thunderstorms across the country between August 14 and 17, especially near the mountains. The heaviest storms are expected on Monday and Tuesday.

However, from Friday, forecasters predicted that more stable conditions will take over, meaning a perfect weekend for sunbathers across Switzerland. Hot, dry and stable weather is then forecast for the foreseeable future.
