Winterland Ascona-Locarno brings ice, lights, music and food to two lakeside towns in Canton Ticino this winter. For the 2026/27 edition, Winterland is expanding beyond Locarno to include Ascona as well. The organisers describe it as "two villages, one destination" on the shores of Lake Maggiore, no matter the weather.

Ice, lights & entertainment in Locarno & Ascona

In Locarno, Piazza Grande remains the heart of Winterland. Familiar attractions are returning, including the ice rink, artistic projections, light installations, music and concerts. There is also a zip line, the Magic Tree, the Karaoke Gondola, the Bistrot de la Paix and the Chinoise igloo. There's also a chalet that specialises in serving fondue.

New this year on Piazza Grande is the Casetta del Gusto, which focuses on local food from the region. This edition also introduces a new fairy tale, "A Melody of Light", told through light and projections in both towns.

In Ascona, the lakefront will be turned into a winter setting overlooking Lake Maggiore. The main attraction is a 700-metre ice walk, a skating path lined with lights on the lake. Next to it is the Lake Dome, a transparent lounge for food, events and get-togethers. A lighting project will also light up the historic façades, and there will be music and street food.

A Christmas train will link the two towns, so visitors can explore both Ascona and Locarno on one trip. If you're coming from out of town, it's a great way to learn more about Canton Ticino.

Fun events for kids

Families will find plenty for younger visitors in Locarno. Winterland is running a programme for kids again, and the carousel is back on Piazza Grande. The new version of Santa's House offers an immersive experience with lights, animatronics, elves, a VR sleigh, a Christmas shop and what the organisers call an "original Santa Claus Lift".

Attending Winterland Ascona-Locarno

Winterland will take place from November 19, 2026 to January 6, 2027, open from 10am to 2am, with its base at Piazza Grande, 6600 Locarno.
