About this role

The Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) has been mandated by the General Assembly in its resolution 77/301 to clarify the fate and whereabouts of missing persons in Syria and provide adequate support to victims, survivors, and families of those missing. The IIMP’s founding resolution places emphasis on the full and meaningful representation of victims, survivors, and families of missing persons, and on ensuring that their perspectives remain central to the Institution’s work.

The internship is located within the Executive Office of the Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP). Under the direct supervision of the Public Information Officer or their designated representative, the intern will have the opportunity to work closely with colleagues in the Executive Office and across the Institution to support the development and dissemination of public information products and communication activities related to IIMP’s mandate, priorities, and activities.

The duties of the intern may include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the drafting, editing, and publishing of content for the Institution’s social media platforms, including X, Facebook, and LinkedIn
  • Assisting in the creation of visual and multimedia content, including graphics, short videos, captions, and photo-editing materials
  • Drafting social media posts, website updates, and other communication materials in English and/or Arabic
  • Supporting the coverage of events, meetings, and outreach activities through photography, videography, and preparation of social media updates
  • Assisting in maintaining content calendars and organizing, archiving, and managing photographs, videos, and other communication materials
  • Supporting other public information and communication activities as required

The intern is also responsible for: demonstrating professionalism, creativity, and discretion; completing assigned tasks in a timely and accurate manner; maintaining confidentiality of records, information, and materials accessed during the internship; displaying a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the principles of the Charter; and upholding respect for colleagues, victims, survivors, families of missing persons, and other stakeholders, particularly when engaging with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences.

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Experience in managing social media platforms and creating digital communication content for an organization or institution is desirable. Experience in graphic design, photography, videography or use of content creation tools is desirable.

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required; knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
