For all of its positives, expat life also comes with own unique set of challenges. To improve your wellbeing in Switzerland, ensure you are taking care of your mental, physical, financial and social health.

Wellbeing and life satisfaction in Switzerland

In general, people in Switzerland report a high level of wellbeing. According to a 2022 study by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office, 37,9 percent of people in Switzerland said they were very satisfied with their current life, and a further 53 percent said they were satisfied. This puts Switzerland in the top three most satisfied countries in a Europe-wide comparison.

This is perhaps not surprising: blessed with beautiful natural landscapes taking in mountains, lakes and rivers, Switzerland also offers a high quality of life with easy access to nature. On top of this, jobs in Switzerland command good salaries, and the Swiss healthcare system is one of the best in the world.

Mental healthcare in Switzerland

However, that's not to say that everybody feels happy in Switzerland all of the time. If you are struggling with your mental or physical health, you should know that support is available for anyone who needs it.

Switzerland offers excellent support to anyone who is struggling with their mental health. If you find yourself neededing support, you can reach out to a counsellor or therapist, or alternatively speak to your regular GP. Even basic health insurance in Switzerland covers the cost of psychotherapy and psychiatric care, but you will usually need a doctor's referral.

Pyschologists, counsellors and therapists in Switzerland

If you are struggling with loneliness, depression, anxiety, stress or any other kind of mental or emotional disorder, you can reach out to an expat-friendly counsellor, psychologist or psychiatrist for support in English.

Personal development and life coaches in Switzerland

If you are feeling stressed or dissatisfied with your life, or struggling to find direction, motivation or career satsifaction, why not consult a life coach in Switzerland who can help you with your personal and professional development and set new, effective habits.

Groups & clubs in Switzerland

Joining a group or club in Switzerland is a great way to connect with the international community, make friends, and reduce loneliness. Our selection of groups and clubs across various Swiss cities covers all kinds of different interests - from sports and arts/culture to business and politics.

Taking care of your physical health

Physical activity is popular pastime in Switzerland, and the health benefits - both mental and physical - of exercise are well-recognised by authorities. Indeed, many supplemental health insurance companies might contribute to the cost of your gym membership, in recognition of the benefits that physical exercise has on your health.

It is sometimes also possible to get the costs of fitness courses and health promotion schemes (such as aerobics classes, postnatal exercise classes or general preventative classes) covered by your health insurance as well. Speak to your health insurance company to see what they offer.
