As part of a project to modernise passenger transport, Zurich Airport (ZRH) has announced that the second Skymetro tunnel closed for renovations on November 3 and is expected to reopen in May 2027. Passengers should expect longer transfer times over the coming months.
Replacement buses introduced to handle peak travel to Dock E
The largest airport in Switzerland launched a multi-year renovation project in 2024, focusing on upgrading the Skymetro to “ensure its long-term operation and create additional capacity,” a Zurich Airport press release states.
The Skymetro is a train that transports passengers between the main Airside Center (Gates A, B and D) and Dock E, where most long-haul and non-Schengen flights depart.
In June 2026, the airport completed renovations of the first Skymetro tunnel and has now closed the second. The already upgraded tunnel will now be the sole transporter of passengers until the second reopens again around May next year.
During daily peak periods, especially during the upcoming winter holiday season, a replacement bus service will run alongside the Skymetro. Travellers flying out of Gate E on SWISS and international partner airlines should factor in additional transfer time to clear passport control and reach their boarding gates.
Four-car trains and boosted capacity from 2027
The specific upgrades to the Skymetro include improving the transport system’s “control and drive technology” and increasing the capacity of the train from three to four cars, explained the airport's press release.
Once both tunnels are back up and running, the airport transit’s capacity will increase by 25 percent from 8.000 to 10.000 passengers per hour each way.
