Which parts of Switzerland offer the best holiday homes?

By Jan de Boer

Want to have a spring or summer holiday in Switzerland, but also want the independence that a house or apartment provides? To help travellers along, holiday home platform E-Domizil has revealed the towns, cantons, regions and ski resorts in Switzerland with the best holiday homes.

Holiday apartment ranking by E-Domizil

To create the list, E-Domizil - the largest online platform for holiday apartments in Switzerland - analysed 6.800 different holiday properties in the alpine nation. Specifically, they looked at the average customer review scores of each property, based on amenities, location and cleanliness. These scores were then combined into an average out of five.

To make it fair, the site divided the ranking into three categories: large, small and regions. The small ranking was for destinations with between 30 and 99 holiday homes, while the large category was for those with more than 100 holiday apartments. 23 of Switzerland’s tourist regions were also analysed and ranked.

Toggenburg named best place in Switzerland for holiday homes

Taking the top spot among large destinations was the Toggenburg region in Canton St. Gallen, scoring 4,88 out of five. The ski resort of Davos Klosters and the Graubünden region of Surselva rounded out the podium places.

With its lush rolling hills, epic mountains and charming lakes and rivers, Toggenburg is a must-visit for any fan of nature. Some highlights of the region include the tree walk in the Neckertal, and the stunning views and hikes around the resort of Wildhaus.

The favourite ski resort of the British royal family, Davos Klosters is often rated as an ideal destination for any ski and snowboarding enthusiasts - though don’t try to book a hotel stay during WEF, lest you enjoy paying thousands of francs for a night's stay. Finally, whether it be a mountain bike trail, hike or cheeky cocktail on top of a mountain, Surselva has you covered.

Swiss Alps take the gold for small holiday destinations

Continuing the theme of mountains, nature, wildlife and hiking, all the best small destinations were also located in the Swiss Alps. Taking the gold was the Valais resort area of Brig Simplon, followed by the region of Viamala and, perhaps the Swissest part of Switzerland, Appenzellerland.

When it came to regions, Canton Bern took the top spot - with the canton being home to the stunning castles at Thun and Spiez, the adrenaline sports capital of Interlaken and the stunning mountains of Eiger and Jungfrau, it’s easy to see why! Bern was followed by eastern Switzerland and Graubünden.
