Lucerne

More than 25.000 runners are expected to participate in the Swiss City Marathon in Lucerne, one of the largest sporting events in Switzerland! It takes place every year on the last Sunday of October.

One of Switzerland's greatest, fastest and largest marathons

Ever since the first edition of the race in 2007, the Swiss City Marathon has had an outstanding reputation and has become one of the top running events in Switzerland. After its first edition, it quickly became the third-largest Swiss marathon after the Zurich Marathon and the Jungfrau Marathon.

Spectacular Lucerne running course

The Swiss City Marathon is a rewarding experience for both runners and spectators alike, thanks to the very scenic running course. It takes in many famous landmarks and historic sites. The race begins at Haldenstrasse and finishes up at the Swiss Museum of Transport, where spectators can enjoy a unique atmosphere and festive vibe. Around 40.000 spectators turn out every year!

The route brings athletes past many city landmarks such as the Hofkirche and the iconic Chapel Bridge. Then past the Culture and Congress Centre Lucerne (KKL). The course continues on the Horw peninsula where the mountains and Lake Lucerne, one of the most famous lakes in Switzerland, provide an impressive backdrop.

The route brings runners past the football stadium of FC Lucerne and back through the Old Town, finishing at the Swiss Museum of Transport. This exciting sporting event combines a fun mix of athletic competition with a fun festival, with bands, DJs and orchestras due to perform.

Four different races at the Swiss City Marathon

There are different races taking place

  • Marathon (42,195 km)
  • Half Marathon (21 km)
  • City Run (10 km)
  • City Run for charity (10 km)

Attend the Swiss City Marathon as a runner or a spectator

Whether you are a spectator or a runner, Swiss City Marathon is a wonderful autumn event that's not to be missed.

Both athletes and spectators are advised to arrive to the race by public transport rather than driving because the city is likely to be congested. Residents should take note of road closures and alternative routes which may cause delays.
