About this role

Validated trade and export-potential datasets: By the end of Month 1, collect, clean, evaluate and validate the statistical data required to compute export potential and other agreed trade and market intelligence indicators, including documentation of data sources, quality checks, identified gaps and corrective actions.

Updated statistical databases and analytical outputs: By the end of Month 2, update and quality-assure the statistical databases underlying the Export Potential Map tool, compute the agreed indicators, and submit reproducible datasets, calculation files and a brief methodological note summarizing the results, limitations and outstanding issues.

Visualizations, training support and final handover: By the end of Month 3, prepare publication-ready graphs, tables and analytical materials for reports, presentations or training activities, incorporate feedback from TMI, and submit a final handover package containing all updated datasets, scripts, visual outputs, documentation and a summary of completed work and follow-up actions.

The International Trade Centre (ITC), a joint agency of the United Nations and the World Trade Organization, assists developing countries to leverage expanding trade opportunities in an increasingly complex global environment. ITC promotes sustainable and inclusive development goals through trade.

The Trade and Market Intelligence section (TMI) is part of ITC’s Division of Market Development (DMD). TMI has developed a range of methodologies and tools for strategic and operational market research, focusing on products and markets of interest to developing countries, assessing sectoral and national trade performance and trade competitiveness, and evaluating the impact of trade policies. TMI regularly supports the work of ITC projects and beneficiary countries through its tools and methodologies.

Under the direct guidance of the Associate Statistician (TMI), the overall supervision of the Chief (TMI), and in close collaboration with the Studies team, the International Consultant will support the TMI section in the preparation and analysis of trade, export potential and trade policy datasets as follows:

  • Assist in the collection, evaluation, analysis, and dissemination of statistical data to compute export potential and other trade-related indicators.
  • Assist in developing, implementing and managing statistical database(s) underlying the Export Potential Map web tools.
  • Prepare graphs and tables to visualize export potential and other trade-related indicators for reports.
  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of trainings, reports and other duties as assigned.
  • Collection, evaluation, analysis, and dissemination of statistical data to compute trade and market intelligence indicators.

Postgraduate degree in Economics, with a quantitative focus, or similar (e.g. undergraduate in Economics and postgraduate degrees in data analytics). A minimum of six months of experience in quantitative data analysis, statistical programming or data management required.

Additional experience: Previous work experience on trade data analysis is an asset. Strong knowledge of R, Python, Stata or SAS is required.

Skills: Demonstrated analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to interpret complex datasets and translate findings into actionable insights. Strong attention to detail and commitment to ensuring the accuracy, consistency and quality of outputs. Excellent planning and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities. Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team environment. Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-specialist audiences. Commitment to documentation, knowledge sharing and the maintenance of reproducible analytical processes. Flexibility and adaptability in responding to evolving analytical needs and project requirements.

Proficiency in English. French or Spanish desirable.
