Switzerland bucks trend with record number of people working from home
Switzerland always has to be that little bit different… As major companies across the world are making headlines by demanding that their employees return to the office full-time, more and more companies in Switzerland are offering home working.
Record number of remote work jobs listed in Switzerland
The proportion of advertised jobs in Switzerland offering remote or hybrid work reached a record high of 14 percent in the second quarter of 2025, according to analysis by job platform Indeed. “This means that the supply of flexible jobs has more than quintupled since before the pandemic”, the report concludes.
As Watson reports, this puts Switzerland in third place among the largest western economies when it comes to the availability of remote work. Only in the UK and Germany are there more options.
Switzerland bucking the trend set by other western countries
The trend is noteworthy because in many other western countries the tide is moving the other way, with major companies rescinding work-from-home rights for their employees. Disney, Apple, Starbucks, Amazon and Boeing are just a few high-profile examples. Several companies are doing this, despite data showing that employees highly value flexible work options, and often would prefer to resign than return to the office.
But that might just be more good news for Switzerland: “If companies succeed in continuing on this path [to expanding home-working opportunities], Switzerland can establish itself as a leading location for flexible working models in Europe in the long term,” said Virginia Sondergeld, labour market expert at Indeed.
