Unemployment rising in Switzerland, but some sectors recruiting
After years of record-high employment rates, unemployment in Switzerland is starting to rise again, the result of the weak European economy and the impact of US tariffs. Many companies are responding to the situation by adjusting their recruitment rates.
However, according to a new job report by the labour market research institute x28, plenty of companies in Switzerland are still actively hiring, and some of them are even increasing their recruitment efforts. It all depends on where you’re looking and the sector in which you work.
Regional differences in vacancies in Switzerland
As 20 Minuten reports, there are significant regional differences in the number of advertised positions in Switzerland. According to x28, the highest number of open jobs is in Canton Zug, where there are 44,95 vacancies per 1.000 residents. This is followed by the cantons of Obwalden (33,66) and Lucerne (32,07). There are fewer vacancies in Canton Ticino (4,64), Vaud (9,76) and Jura (10,11).
There are also big differences between different industries. The report found that, currently, the most open positions are for nursing staff and electricians. Sales consultants and carpenters are also in high demand. In contrast, there are fewer openings in the water supply and textile industries.
