The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has released several new features to its mobile app as part of a significant design overhaul now rolling out to passengers across Switzerland.

What new features are available on the SBB Mobile app?

Used daily by millions of public transport users across Switzerland, the SBB Mobile app is an essential tool for helping people navigate their way around the country.

The national train company has confirmed via the SBB website that it has "undertaken a major redesign of the app" and fixed "several usability issues", while also launching new features.

Updates to the SBB Mobile app include:

  • Push notifications that can inform travellers of a delay, change or cancellation to a journey.
  • Workers can now set up their daily commute and receive relevant updates.
  • An interactive map that can provide directions when changing trains, as well as the location of services like shops and bike parking.
  • Integration of P+Rail, including finding, booking and paying for a parking space and ticket all in one app.
  • Ability to buy a public transport ticket for someone else, including your dog or if you need to book a bike. These tickets can be saved in one account.
  • Anyone with a Supersaver ticket can now use the Easyride function.
  • Seat booking for longer train rides, including to France, Germany and Italy, can now be done in the app using a visual carriage plan.
  • SwissPass subscriptions, such as the GA Travelcard and Half Fare Travelcard, are now more seamlessly integrated and can be easily shown alongside a valid ticket during an inspection.

When will the new SBB Mobile update be available?

The updated SBB app is already available for iOS and Android users and, according to SBB spokesperson Reto Schärli, as reported by 20 Minuten, the "automatic download will be rolled out gradually."
