Alcohol-free beers becoming increasingly popular in Switzerland
People in Switzerland are increasingly embracing alcohol-free beer. According to the Swiss Brewery Association, the market for alcohol-free beer is growing, while the beer market as a whole is declining.
Market for alcohol-free beer exploding in Switzerland
7 percent of beers drunk in Switzerland are now alcohol-free, according to the Swiss Brewery Association, RTS reports. According to brewing professionals, alcohol-free beverages are now the most promising sector, growing while the beer market as a whole declines.
Manufacturers are gradually shifting their production to meet demand: Swiss supermarket Migros said its range of alcohol-free beers has increased by 80 percent over the past three years, while Arthur Viaud, owner of the brewery La Nébuleuse in Vaud, said that its production of alcohol-free beers has jumped by 60 percent year-on-year in the first half of 2025 to meet demand.
New brewing methods make alcohol-free beer taste better
Viaud said that some of this growth in popularity could be down to improvements in the taste of alcohol-free beers, as new brewing techniques have enabled manufacturers to retain a lot more of the aromas of regular beer, while still skipping on the alcohol.
Switzerland is not alone in experiencing this trend. The same can be seen in Germany, where breweries now produce almost twice as much alcohol-free beer as they did 10 years ago. At the same time, Germans are drinking less and less regular beer every year.
