Zurich Airport one of the 10 best airports in the world, ranking reveals

In the latest awards by Skytrax, Zurich Airport has been ranked as one of the best airports in the world. The largest airport in Switzerland was praised for its excellent security services and friendly workers.

World Airport Awards 2023 by Skytrax

Started in 1999, the annual World Airport Awards by Skytrax ranks which airports around the world are best overall and in a number of categories. To determine the winner of each section, the organisation uses survey data from 550 airports around the world, provided by respondents from 100 different countries.

The airports were rated in over 40 different categories, ranging from ease of access by driving or public transport to the quality of internet services, security speed, hygiene and the range of shops and restaurants on offer. These aspects were then combined into a series of rankings.

Singapore Changi is the world's best airport

According to the awards for 2023, the World’s Best Airport is Singapore Changi. Skytrax noted that Singapore remains a massive hub for travellers from all over the world, and “is renowned for its unrivalled passenger experiences.” It also won the gongs for the world's best airport dining and leisure amenities.

Despite having to accommodate World Cup fans throughout the winter, Doha’s Hamad airport came second because of its "stunning terminal complex" and “luxurious” atmosphere. Tokyo Haneda, and Seoul Incheon rounded out the top five.

The biggest improvement in the overall ranking was Shenzhen Airport in China, going from 57th in 2022 to 31st in 2023. One of the largest declines in the ranking this year, perhaps due to the repeated disruption there last summer, was Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, falling from 15th in 2022 to 29th in 2023.

Zurich the eighth-best airport in the world in 2023

In 2023, Zurich Airport rose from its ninth-place finish in 2022 to rank eighth, just behind Munich Airport. In the overall ranking, the airport was praised for its hub status with SWISS and its relative proximity to downtown Zurich.

Zurich Airport has also retained its crown of having the best security checks in the world, but sadly lost its title of "cleanest airport in Europe" to Helsinki. Finally, while not in the global top 10, the alpine nation's busiest hub is also home to Europe's 10th most friendly airport staff.
