Saturn and the Harvest Moon align over Switzerland on September 26

The latest astronomical spectacle is due to make an appearance over Switzerland this week, as the full moon and Saturn will be visible with just the naked eye.

Saturn visible over Switzerland this Saturday

After the sun has set at exactly 6.49pm on Saturday, September 26, the so-called autumn or Harvest Moon (Erntemond) will be at its fullest and brightest, reports Watson. But that’s not all. Eager stargazers will be able to spot Saturn floating nearby. 

And what’s more, the ringed planet, which is visible from Earth to differing degrees during the year, is currently in its most visible phase.

This means that, despite the light from the full moon, it will be possible to see Saturn, which will appear as a golden, shining dot in the sky, slightly below the moon.

Use a telescope to see Neptune too

Neptune will also be visible near the moon, but not with the naked eye. So only those with a telescope can get this extra dose of celestial wonder.

The full moon is expected to be extra bright this month because it appears relatively close to the autumn equinox, which took place on September 23, meaning it remains in the sky long after sunset.

However, October’s full moon, also known as the hunter’s moon, is expected to be even brighter. The hunter's moon will appear on October 26.
