Following a wet and stormy weekend in Switzerland, MeteoSwiss has issued a warning about heavy snowfall expected across the Swiss Alps on Monday, October 27.
Heavy snow expected across the Swiss Alps
As we enter the last week of October and adjust to the recent clock change, MeteoSwiss has issued a warning for a significant risk of snowfall in the Alps. Heavy snow is expected to fall in the areas of Graubünden and the Bernese Oberland (including the Jungfrau and the Eiger), and will also stretch into Appenzell and some parts of Valais, reports 20 Minuten.
The season’s first major snowfall is expected to reach the mountains between 6am on Monday and 12am on Tuesday. The heaviest snow is predicted to fall from 12pm to 6pm. There is also an increased risk of avalanches in the regions affected.
Significant danger warning issued
As a result of the expected snowfall, MeteoSwiss has issued a level three “significant danger” warning to areas with altitudes over 1.600 metres above sea level. In these mountain ranges, up to 50 centimetres of snow is expected to fall.
At altitudes over 1.200 metres above sea level, between 10 and 30 cm of snow could fall. High winds of up to 130 kilometres per hour are also expected in some areas.
The weather could impact drivers and those travelling on public transport in the affected areas. People should check the traffic situation, e.g. on the TCS website, before and during travel. The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research also issues daily avalanche updates, available here.
