Anyone looking to enjoy the outdoors in Switzerland should make the most of Friday's mild sunshine before a sharp seasonal reality check hits. After temperatures peak near 22 degrees celcius to close the working week, an incoming cold front will plunge the country into typical autumn weather.

Mild sunshine and high fog to close out work week

The end of the working week offers a classic autumn pattern across the Swiss plateau. Under typical temperature inversion conditions, Friday will start with widespread fog or low-stratus cloud (Hochnebel) blanketing the lowlands below 600 to 800 metres.

Once that grey layer burns off, the sun will take over. Highs across the Mittelland are expected to reach between 20 and 22 degrees, depending on how quickly the morning fog clears. South of the Alps in Ticino, skies will remain largely clear, with mild temperatures around 21 to 22 degrees, matching the north.

Conditions in the mountains will be exceptionally warm through Friday afternoon, according to forecasters at MeteoNews. For hikers and mountain bikers heading out, the zero-degree line sits near an unusually high 4.000 metres, with temperatures at 2.000 metres hovering around a comfortable 14 degrees.

Cold front brings rain, lower snow lines, & the "Schwarze Bise"

The late-summer warmth that has lingered uncharacteristically long in Switzerland will come to an abrupt end on Saturday as a cold front sweeps in from the Jura mountains.

Clouds and rain will spread across the northwest first, though eastern regions like Graubünden and the higher Alps will likely stay dry until the evening. Temperatures will tumble significantly across the board, maxing out between 12 and 14 degrees.

For higher elevations, this means the snow line will drop from above 2.500 metres down to around 2.200 metres, adding fresh powder after the Swiss Alps saw their first snow earlier this season.

By Sunday, a low-pressure system forming over the Ligurian Sea will push heavy, persistent rain into Ticino and the southern Valais. North of the Alps, a weather pattern known as the "Schwarze Bise" (black bise wind) will take hold.

This phenomenon will drag a thick, overcast cloud layer across the northern cantons. While eastern Switzerland will largely remain dry under this grey blanket, the western cantons will see wetter and drearier conditions. Sunday's temperatures will be noticeably chillier, struggling to surpass 10 to 13 degrees in most lowland areas.

Heading into next week, the weather will settle into a much calmer, typical autumn routine. Morning fog will return to the lowlands, burning off to reveal a mix of sun and clouds, with temperatures returning to a standard seasonal average of around 15 degrees.
