A 37-year-old man has died in Zurich after being hit by a tram while crossing the road on Badenerstrasse on Thursday morning.

Fatal tram accident on Zurich's Badenerstrasse

Zurich City Police confirmed that the pedestrian was fatally injured by a line 2 tram believed to be travelling outbound towards Schlieren, Geissweid at around 8.45am on Thursday, August 27. The tram struck the man as he crossed the road “for reasons that are still unclear”. He was then “thrown by the impact and struck by a car travelling correctly towards the city centre,” reports 20 Minuten.

Emergency services were immediately sent to the site, but the pedestrian unfortunately died at the scene. Neither the driver of the tram nor the driver of the car suffered any injuries.

According to Blick, an investigation into the incident has been launched. Earlier this year, transport operator Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich (VBZ) revealed a 10 percent increase in tram and bus accidents in Zurich in 2025 compared to 2024.

Separate tram collision reported in Bern

Just the other day, a separate incident also took place in Bern. On Tuesday morning, a young woman was injured after being hit by a tram when crossing the tracks around the Murtenstrasse/Waldmannstrasse intersection, according to another Blick report.

Emergency services treated her at the scene, then took her to hospital. No one else was hurt.
