The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) has shared the latest figures revealing how people in Switzerland travelled in 2024. On average, people took 2,9 overnight trips and 8,8 day trips.
Day trips more popular than overnight trips in Switzerland
The FSO has released the latest figures on how frequently people living in Switzerland took a holiday or day trip in 2024, along with the types of trips that they took. On average, people took 2,9 overnight trips, which was the same as in 2023 but fewer than in the years before, reports Watson.
Day trips were more popular than overnight trips, with people taking 8,8 day trips on average throughout the year, perhaps to a Swiss city or one of the country’s many mountains. 90 percent of these day trips were within the country in comparison to just 35 percent of overnight trips.
How much do people in Switzerland spend on holidays?
The average amount spent per person per trip in 2024 was 251 Swiss francs. This was lower when travelling in Switzerland at 228 Swiss francs, and higher when going abroad at 301 Swiss francs.
The average daily spend when travelling within Switzerland, such as on public transport, accommodation, taxis or food, rose 20 percent to 146 Swiss francs. When looking at the amount spent per day abroad, the figure remained unchanged from 2023, averaging 168 Swiss francs per day.
65 percent of overnight trips taken by people living in Switzerland were to destinations abroad. Neighbouring countries of Germany and Italy made up 12 percent of all overnight trips, and France 9 percent.
Over 25 percent of trips taken were to another European country and 7 percent of trips were to a location outside of Europe. In total, 15,4 million overnight trips were taken abroad in 2024, a similar number to 2023.
