A recent survey by consulting company EY has found that over a third of people in Switzerland plan to boycott US products when shopping for Christmas gifts this year.

40 percent of Swiss Christmas shoppers plan to avoid US products

Gift giving is a staple Christmas tradition in Switzerland, with many flocking to Swiss cities in December to finalise their purchases. EY has recently surveyed 790 consumers in the alpine nation to find out more about the country’s Christmas shopping habits in 2025.

The survey results have found that there is “no desire for US products under the Christmas tree” this year, according to Nau. 40 percent of people surveyed plan to avoid buying US products and 30 percent plan to spend less on gifts as a result of the US tariffs on Switzerland.

Swiss Christmas shoppers to spend more this year, on average

Despite being faced with rising costs of expenses such as health insurance premiums, car insurance and rent, shoppers in Switzerland are expected to spend a little more in 2025 compared to 2024. According to the survey, consumers plan to splash out an average of 341 Swiss francs on Christmas gifts, which is around one-fifth more than in 2024, reports Nau.

The most popular type of gift to give is either vouchers or cash. Toys, food, clothing, books and cosmetics are also the gifts of choice for many Swiss consumers. The EY survey also found that when Christmas shopping, consumers still tend to buy gifts in-store rather than online.

Lastly, the survey asked about whether AI plays a role in helping gift-givers choose a present for friends and family. According to the results, only 15 percent said that AI plays an important role, with the majority choosing to think of ideas themselves.
