Bern hotel offers 20% discount in exchange for homemade Christmas cookies

By Jan de Boer

Taking Christmas treats to a whole new level: a hotel in Bern has offered a 20 percent discount to any guest who brings them homemade Christmas cookies.

Hotel Alpenblick in Bern offers cheap rooms for Christmas treats

Like last year, the staff at the Hotel Alpenblick in the de-facto capital of Switzerland have a problem: none of them can bake. In videos posted to social media, staff are seen trying (and failing) to make the sweet treats and Christmas cookies that the alpine nation is so famous for. “We need your help… we’ve even gotten worse”, the video notes.

Therefore, to make sure they are well stocked for the holidays, the hotel has relaunched its special discount. Anyone who books a trip with the code HUEFTGOLD from November 15 to December 31 can benefit from a 20 percent discount, if they provide the front desk with a batch of homemade Christmas cookies.

"We have a very greedy team. Sweets are always a topic in our office," hotel manager Robert Kneubühler told 20 Minuten. He said that the campaign was a win-win; guests get a cheaper room and staff get a treat that may distract them - at least for a little while - from the fact they are working during Christmas.

2024 is the second year that the Alpenblick has offered the deal. “The guests really put in a lot of effort," Kneubühler added - last year, 40 guests gave up the goodies, who went on to “philosophise about cookies and exchange secret baking tips” with reception. According to the hotel, staff gained 3,7 kilos of “hip fat” as a result of the cookie campaign.

Fancy a discount trip to the heart of Switzerland? Then don your pinnies and imagine you are in the final of Bake-off!
