Switzerland is still the second-richest country in the world
Switzerland has once again been ranked the second-most wealthy country in the world, according to a new report.
World’s wealth increased in 2024
The world’s population became wealthier in 2024, with total financial assets increasing by 8,7 percent to 269 trillion euros - a stronger increase than the 8 percent recorded in 2023. That’s the headline take-home of the latest Global Wealth Report, published by Allianz, an insurance company in Switzerland.
The annual report placed Switzerland second overall in terms of net financial assets per capita, behind the US, and even in first place for gross financial assets per capita. While Switzerland may have more wealth than the US, it also has higher debts.
Financial assets in Switzerland increased significantly last year
Overall, the gross financial assets of households in Switzerland rose by 4,2 percent in 2024, according to the report, massively exceeding last year’s growth of 2,6 percent. At the same time, debt only increased by 2,1 percent.
The report also found that households in Switzerland hold the highest average real estate assets, with a value of 330.800 euros, above Australia and the US.
According to Allianz, people in Switzerland differ in their savings habits compared to their neighbours in Austria and Germany. Rather than putting their savings in Swiss banks (just 15 percent chose this option), most people prefer to put their savings into insurance products like life insurance or pillar 3 pensions. 41 percent of savings in Switzerland is invested in insurance products.
