About this role

This position is located in the Budget and Finance Section, Executive Office (EO), in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), in Geneva, Switzerland. This internship is for a minimum 3 and maximum of 6 months and designed to be full-time or part-time, in person, remotely, or in a hybrid arrangement. OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA's mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Head, Cash & Grants Management, HQ, Field Budget and IOV Support Unit, the intern will assist with the following tasks:

  • Review existing financial reporting templates and identify opportunities to improve structure, consistency, data quality checks and refresh processes.
  • Support the redesign of budget and expenditure reports, statements of accounts and donor contribution detail reports.
  • Use Power Query to connect Excel-based reports to approved data sources and transform data into reporting-ready formats.
  • Develop refreshable reporting templates that reduce manual copy-and-paste steps and enable automatic updates when source data is refreshed.
  • Create clear data transformation logic, naming conventions and documentation so that reports can be maintained by the team after the internship.
  • Assist in validating report outputs against source data and existing official records, including checks for completeness, accuracy and consistency.
  • Explore opportunities to apply AI or data analytics techniques to improve data classification, variance analysis, exception identification or narrative reporting, where appropriate.
  • Prepare user guidance, standard operating procedures and brief training materials for staff using the enhanced reports.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, Microsoft Excel, including formulas, tables, PivotTables and data validation, is required. Applicants must have good knowledge of Power Query, data cleaning, data transformation and connection to structured data sources, is required. Applicants must have good knowledge of Power BI, Python, SQL, AI tools or other data analytics and visualization tools, is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in reading, understanding, speaking and writing English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
