Winter temperatures to return this weekend in Switzerland

By Clara Bousfield

Spring arrived early in Switzerland so far this year, as temperatures reached 23 degrees celsius in some parts of the country in February causing certain types of pollen to bloom early. After a mild start to March, temperatures are expected to drop later this week so don’t pack your winter coat away just yet!

Cold front on its way to Switzerland

Sunshine and mild temperatures will be replaced by a return to winter weather, low temperatures and cloud cover across Switzerland this week.

The start of the week will continue to be reasonably spring-like, with highs of 16 degrees in some cities in Switzerland on Tuesday, March 10. Saharan dust may cause “pale sunshine”, reports 20 Minuten

From Tuesday evening, there could be some March showers across much of the country and the weather will become a little more unpredictable. Wednesday and Thursday could continue to see a mix of sunshine and showers, and temperatures are expected to be slightly cooler at around 12 degrees.

Temperatures will drop this weekend across Switzerland

As the weekend arrives, “there will be a significant drop in temperature”, says meteorologist Peter Wick. Temperatures will drop by around 10 degrees to between 5 and 6 degrees on Saturday and will be coupled with rain showers.

“We’re experiencing exceptionally mild weather,” for this time of year, continues Wick, and “we’re more than a month ahead of schedule.” The lower temperatures expected over the weekend are “actually more normal for this time of year than what we experienced last week”.
