In recent years, mobile apps have become more popular than ever, especially here in Switzerland. From racing games to social media, it is hard to think of a world without them. Unsurprisingly, topping the list in 2021 is the Federal Office of Public Health's (FOPH) COVID-19 certificate app.

Swiss COVID-19 certificates are top of the list

Whether you’re an Android fan or an Apple-lover, it’s easy to agree that mobile apps bring about great convenience when it comes to everyday life. In these modern times, there are apps for everything: from buying groceries to online dating, gaming and even booking a taxi.

According to similarweb.com, the most downloaded free app in Switzerland is the COVID-19 certificate app, which allows vaccinated people to enter public spaces such as pubs, bars and large events and festivals. The app’s popularity is unsurprising given that 67,2 percent of the population in Switzerland is currently vaccinated, and many people are keen to download the app so that they can continue doing the activities that they enjoyed before the pandemic.

Just behind the COVID-19 certificate, in second place on the Android store, lies Rocket League Sideswipe, while for Apple users, WhatsApp is the second most popular app. Other popular apps on both stores included the COVID-19 QR scanner app (the partner app to the COVID-19 certificate), and the FOPH’s SwissCovid app, used for track and trace.

Social media proves popular in Switzerland

Of course, some of the most used mobile apps are social media. The most popular social media and instant messaging apps for Android users in Switzerland are (in order): TikTok, Telegram, Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp. Apple users’ most used social app was WhatsApp, followed by Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Telegram and Facebook.

The most popular shopping apps in Switzerland are Bring! Grocery shopping list, Lidl and Joom, while the most downloaded food apps include McDonalds and Just Eat.

Mobile users in Switzerland are fond of consuming media on their devices, too. Spotify, Netflix, and Disney+ all rank highly.
