Storms and hurricane-force winds forecast for this weekend in Switzerland
After a brief respite from the cold temperatures on Wednesday, the weather in Switzerland is set to take a turn for the worse, with rain and storms forecast for most of the weekend. However, there may be a brief respite, with sunshine and average temperatures expected for most Swiss cities on Sunday afternoon.
Storms to hit Switzerland on Friday and Saturday night
A low-pressure area from the UK is blamed for the poor weather forecast for Thursday and Friday, which is expected to bring rain and storms to areas around Zurich, Zug, Lucerne and Basel. The highest temperatures north of the Alps will be a paltry 15 degrees, expected for the area around Lake Geneva.
On the weekend, MeteoNews has forecast another storm north of the Alps, to hit on Friday and Saturday night. In the mountains, hurricane-force winds are expected, reaching speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour.
South of Switzerland expected to remain warm and dry
Those seeking respite from the cold, wet, windy weather can find it in the south and southeast of the country. Temperatures south of the Alps are set to stay around 19 degrees for most of the weekend, especially in the sunniest place in Switzerland: Lugano.
Luckily, there may be a glimmer of hope for the other residents of Switzerland, with Sunday afternoon expected to be bright and sunny. Then, finally, springtime is set to arrive once again, with the weather stabilising by Tuesday next week.
