Sherlock Holmes TV series to be filmed in Switzerland
Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) has announced it is working with Sky Switzerland to develop a new Sherlock Holmes TV series set to be filmed in Switzerland soon.
“The Death of Sherlock Holmes”, a working title for the new TV programme, will focus on the last moments of the famous detective’s life in Switzerland, reports 20 Minuten.
With its abundance of mountains and lakes, Switzerland has often been used as a filming location for many well-known international movies and TV shows. A release date for the new show has not yet been announced.
New Sherlock Holmes show takes place after his death
“The Final Problem” is the last story in the collection of books “The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In it, Holmes famously dies after falling from the 300-metre-high Reichenbach Falls, near Meiringen in canton Bern, during a battle with his nemesis Professor Moriarty.
Holmes fans can visit a plaque commemorating the detective at the waterfall, and can also visit a Sherlock Holmes museum in the small alpine town.
Three years after his death, however, Holmes returns and no one is quite sure when or how. The new SRF and Sky Switzerland series will “fill this gap” in time.
Filming will begin in Switzerland around spring. South Tyrol in Italy and Bavaria in Germany are also set to be key filming locations for the new TV show. Swiss directors Pierre Monnard and Claudia Bluemhuber will take the lead on the show.
