Mallard duck caught speeding in Switzerland

By Jan de Boer

While we often hear stories of teenagers getting caught racing through the street way over the speed limit, we don’t expect Swiss wildlife to also get in on the action. The police have reported that a duck has been caught speeding in Canton Bern, seven years to the day since another winged racer was caught by the same camera.

Duck clocked at 52 km/h by Swiss speed camera

In a post to social media, the local council in Köniz reported that a mallard duck had been caught speeding on Wangentalstrasse on April 13. The bird was clocked travelling at 52 kilometres per hour, 22 km/h over the limit.

The police later confirmed that the image is a genuine photograph from the speed camera and that the machine had not been tampered with. It’s more than a billable offence, too: if a driver were caught at the same speed as the duck, they would likely have their driving licence suspended.

Is this the winged racer's second offence?

Spookily, the incident comes seven years to the day since another duck was clocked by the same camera travelling at the same speed. The town wrote that it was positively quackers to have “a duck as a notorious speeder and repeat offender”.

As to whether it is the same duck that baffled the police back in 2018, mallards can live for up to 10 years. Therefore, it cannot be completely ruled out that Köniz is home to a duck possessed with the need for speed. Luckily for the winged maverick, the emergency services will not be pursuing any charges.
