6 of the best beaches in Switzerland

Updated on Jul 19, 2024

It’s officially summertime, meaning it’s time to head to the beach! While Switzerland is a landlocked country best known for its majestic mountains, there is no shortage of incredible natural, gravel and sandy beaches bordering lakes that are a delight to visit in the summer when the weather is hot.

Top lake beaches to visit in Switzerland

There are many gorgeous lake beaches in Switzerland, but here are just a few of our favourites.

1. Strandbad Tiefenbrunnen, Zurich

Strandbad Tiefenbrunnen is a unique beach in Zurich with a view of the city's skyline in the background. This sandy beach is the perfect place to take a relaxing break after a day at work. Dip in the lake, hop off a diving board, or recline on a towel under the sun before heading back to the city.

2. Lido di Lugano, Lugano

Coined one of the most beautiful beaches in Switzerland, the Lido di Lugano beach really looks like something out of a painting. The turquoise bay glimmers under the sun, and the picturesque mountains act as the perfect backdrop, giving the area a very seaside-like feel. When you've had enough of the water and relaxing on the sandy beachfront, you can head to the volleyball courts or football fields for a game.

3. Baby Plage, Geneva

Want to go to a beach that’s perfect for families with children? Baby Plage in Geneva is an incredible beach that is super kid-friendly with its crystal water, sandy areas, and best of all – a jungle gym and a grassy park for the little ones to enjoy. Enjoy the fresh air in the park while munching on some of the best local cuisine - the perfect day off!

4. Yvonand Beaches, Cheseaux-Noreaz

Nestled near Lake Neuchâtel in the French-speaking regions of Switzerland, these beaches are a picturesque escape from the bustle of daily life, perfect for whiling away a few hours surrounded by the stunning Swiss mountains. Children can ride the water slides while adults will be tempted by a delicious drink on the bay. Yvondand Beaches are some of the most visited beaches in Switzerland for these reasons and many more.

5. Lake Thun Beaches, Bernese Oberland

Want to go from hiking in the mountains to taking a dip in a stunning lake all on the same day? The Lake Thun Beaches in the alpine regions of the Bernese Oberland are the ideal option for you! After a day of walking, you can head down to the beach to relax on the beautiful lakeshore, where you can have an impeccable view of the breathtaking mountains.

6. Pointe de la Jonction, Geneva

While not technically a beach, one of the most unique places in Switzerland is Pointe de la Jonction, the place where the green waters of the River Rhône meet the grey waters of the River Arve, creating an astonishing natural spectacle as they swirl and mix. On sunny days, locals converge on this spot to barbecue, drink and bathe in the colourful waters. Don't forget your camera!
