Around this time of year, the age-old question always arises: will we get a white Christmas this year? Meteorologists have now issued an initial long-term forecast on whether Switzerland will have a white Christmas in 2025.

Will it snow this Christmas in Switzerland?

According to SRF Meteo, an official white Christmas is declared in Switzerland when at least one centimetre of snow falls on the Bundesplatz in Bern on December 24, 25 or 26th.

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has provided an initial weather forecast for the Christmas period. According to the predictions, “the northern side of the Alps is drier than usual [and] temperatures are also trending towards warmer than average”, reports SRF Meteo.

This initial forecast is a “bad combination” for a white Christmas in Swiss cities this year. “Snow at Christmas requires sufficiently low temperatures and precipitation,” continues SRF Meteo.

Reliable weather forecasts expected 10 days before Christmas

However, weather forecasters have expressed that it is too early to provide a reliable prediction of the weather in Switzerland over the Christmas period. A more detailed forecast can be given about 10 days prior to Christmas.

For anyone who can’t be without snow over the holidays, historical data analysis suggests that this is much more likely in the Swiss mountains. According to 20 Minuten, people should head to Davos, Zermatt, Chur and St. Moritz for a better chance of a magical winter wonderland this Christmas.
