Swissmedic warns of health risks of counterfeit weight loss products
The Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products, Swissmedic, has issued a statement warning of the increased health risk associated with fake and misleading weight loss products that are being advertised primarily through social media, websites and by post.
The advertised products, such as dietary supplements, capsules and drops, often use unapproved logos from authorities like Swissmedic, provide misleading or no information on active ingredients, and falsely advertise products which have been manufactured illegally.
Fake weight loss products containing GLP-1 can be harmful
Swissmedic also warned consumers about illegal and counterfeit products which contain the active ingredient GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). GLP-1 is primarily used to reduce blood sugar and control appetite, to encourage weight loss or manage diabetes. The ingredient can pose significant health risks when marketed as a weight loss drug, often used via insulin pens.
“Injecting insulin by healthy individuals can lead to acute, life-threatening hypoglycemia. Several medical emergencies have also been reported in Switzerland in this context,” explained Swissmedic.
Swissmedic has also warned that products containing GLP-1 must only be used under medical supervision. The agency urges extra caution when purchasing medical products online, recommending that people seek medical advice to ensure safety and proper use across Switzerland.
