SWISS and Edelweiss introduce new power bank rules on flights
SWISS and Edelweiss, part of the Lufthansa Group, have introduced new rules for carrying and using power banks on board flights starting from January 15.
New power bank rules in Switzerland
SWISS and its sister airline Edelweiss, the most popular airlines in Switzerland, have announced new restrictions for power banks on board flights. Starting January 15, passengers will no longer be allowed to charge electronic devices, such as mobile phones, using a power bank.
Charging a power bank using a plane’s electricity is also now prohibited. Furthermore, travellers can only take two power banks onboard and they cannot be placed in overhead luggage. Power banks must be kept either on the passenger, in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front.
Previous rules regarding power banks continue to apply, such as they cannot be placed in checked baggage. Check your airline's website for the latest guidelines before you travel.
Power banks could pose a fire risk
The new rules have been introduced to “enhance safety on board for both passengers and crew members: with its lithium battery, a malfunctioning power bank is a potential fire risk,” according to a SWISS press release.
The regulations comply with the latest recommendations from international aviation organisations, including EASA, FAA, IATA and ICAO.
