A group of people travelling from Poland to Bern were stopped at the German border and arrested on Monday. The reason? They had 23 people in a car meant for seven. The police said the car’s driver, who resides in Bern, should expect a fine.

Seat Alhambra checked by police on Swiss-German border

The car in question - a Seat Alhambra - was checked as part of routine procedure on the border between Switzerland and Germany. When police officers searched the vehicle and asked everyone to step outside they were shocked to find that the car, intended to hold seven passengers, was actually transporting 23.

The passengers were an “extended family” of nine adults and 14 children, said to be Ukrainians travelling from Poland to Bern. After the stop, the family was allowed to continue their journey onward to Bern, but not all in the same seven-seater.
