FlixTrain looking to expand further into Switzerland

FlixTrain is looking to expand further into Switzerland, introducing new routes between Swiss cities and destinations in neighbouring Germany. In an interview with Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, the company’s Managing Director said FlixTrain is set to introduce a new connection between Zurich and Munich soon.

FlixTrain started operations in Switzerland in June

The low-cost train company FlixTrain has been serving customers in Basel since the end of June this year. While previously only offering services in Germany and Sweden, the company now has its sights set on an expansion into Switzerland. 

FlixTrain’s Managing Director Matthias Müller announced that one of the company’s next objectives in Switzerland is to create an affordable rail link between Zurich and Munich. Given that both of the cities are hubs for businesses, the route is likely to be popular with business travellers and tourists alike.

FlixTrain is pushing to expand throughout Europe

While expanding into Switzerland is one of the company’s present aims, the project is part of FlixTrain’s larger goal of expanding across Europe. As more people across the continent choose to travel sustainably via public transportation, rather than heading to the airport, FlixTrain has been taking advantage of consumer trends and providing an affordable, sustainable alternative. 

“We can benefit from the trend in several countries where the demand for sustainable transport is increasing,” Matthias Müller told railway magazine RailJournal in 2020, when talking about the company's expansion into the Swedish market. “We don’t see a need to compete with other railway operators, but other transport modes like cars and planes”, Müller added.
