FlixTrain expands into Switzerland, with 10-franc fares from Basel to Berlin
As part of a major expansion of its route network in Germany, the low-cost train operator FlixTrain has announced that it will expand into Switzerland for the first time, offering tempting ticket prices from as little as 10 francs between Basel and Berlin.
FlixTrain promising cheap tickets from Basel to Berlin
The new line is set to go into operation from June 23 and will offer services to and from the Swiss city from Thursday to Monday. FlixTrain offers connections to 70 other German cities, as well as a long-distance bus service.
The 10-franc fare appears to be an introductory offer to drum up new customers, so it’s as yet unclear how much the journey will cost once the promotional period is over. Currently, tickets for the journey by train between Basel and Berlin cost as much as 150 Swiss francs with FlixTrain’s competitors SBB and Deutsche Bahn.
Flixmobility a growing power in European transport sector
FlixTrain, part of the Flixmobility group, was founded in 2011 as a low-cost transport operator and has since established itself as a major competitor in the European market for long-distance bus and train services.
FlixTrain was launched in 2017 and, after a brief dip during the coronavirus pandemic, now serves around 70 destinations in Germany. The connection to Basel is the company’s first foray outside of Germany.
