From classroom learning to corporate innovation: How ISL champions experiential education
At the International School of Lausanne (ISL), learning is designed to extend well beyond the classroom. Through hands-on experiences, industry engagement, and real-world exposure, students are encouraged to explore how knowledge is applied in professional contexts.
One recent visit organised through the ISL Impact Hub offered Upper Secondary students the opportunity to step into the world of applied research and innovation, reinforcing ISL’s commitment to experiential learning.
ISL students visited Nestlé Health Science Research & Development in Lausanne, gaining first-hand insight into how global organisations approach innovation, collaboration and problem-solving. The experience allowed students to observe how scientific research, strategic thinking and interdisciplinary teamwork come together to address complex health and sustainability challenges.
Learning comes to life
The visit brought together students with interests in science, business, design and health, all eager to understand how their academic learning translates into real-world applications. Welcomed by experienced professionals, the students were introduced to the research and innovation ecosystem of Nestlé Health Science, where evidence-based science drives product development and long-term impact.
Throughout the day, students explored research environments, engaged in discussions with experts, and learned about the processes behind innovation, from early-stage research to practical implementation. These interactions highlighted how curiosity, collaboration and adaptability are essential in professional settings.

Connecting disciplines and perspectives
A key takeaway for students was the interdisciplinary nature of innovation. Concepts studied in classrooms, such as biology, chemistry, economics and design thinking, were shown to intersect seamlessly in real research environments. Students gained a deeper appreciation for how teams with diverse expertise collaborate to solve shared challenges.
One student reflected on how discussions around nutritional science reshaped their understanding of everyday products, while another highlighted how exposure to clinical research sparked interest in future academic pathways. These moments of reflection are central to the Impact Hub’s mission of broadening horizons and fostering informed decision-making.
Preparing for the future
Experiences like this play a vital role in helping students envision future studies and careers. By engaging directly with professionals and seeing innovation in action, students develop confidence, clarity and motivation. They also strengthen essential transferable skills such as critical thinking, communication and teamwork.
The ISL Impact Hub serves as a platform for these opportunities, connecting students with organisations, entrepreneurs and institutions shaping the future. Through company visits, innovation challenges, workshops and mentorship, students are encouraged to explore their interests while developing a strong sense of purpose and responsibility.
