A new analysis from Just Eat has revealed the favourite takeaways of every canton of Switzerland this year. The study found that people’s favourite cheeky restaurant-cooked meals vary widely by language region, with certain cuisines now far more popular than they used to be.

Pizza Margherita dominates takeaway orders in Switzerland

According to the latest Food Trends report from Just Eat, the most popular thing to order across Switzerland, perhaps unsurprisingly, is the forever-favoured Pizza Margherita. It seems as though regardless of trends, you just can’t top a pizza with anything else but tomato sauce and cheese - and maybe some oregano and oil.

Pizzas were by far the most popular choice nationwide, with Prosciutto taking second, Hawaii taking a controversial fourth behind a cheeseburger and - the favourite of anyone with enough cash to combine parmesan with tuna - “customised pizza” rounding out the top five - seven of the top 20 were pizzas.

10 most popular takeaway meals in Switzerland

In all, here are the 10 most popular takeaway meals in Switzerland:

  1. Pizza Margherita
  2. Pizza Prosciutto
  3. Cheeseburger
  4. Pizza Hawaii
  5. Custom choice pizza
  6. Mixed salad
  7. Kebab
  8. Pizza Quatro Stagioni
  9. Butter chicken
  10. Green salad

In terms of cuisine, Just Eat noted that the number of orders for Indian, Swiss and Japanese food has risen by 77, 72 and 55 percent this year respectively compared to 2022. The dish that is seeing the most meteoric rise in the last year is Tibetan-style Momos, with orders of the dumplings increasing by a whopping 900 percent.

Pizzas loosen their grip on French-speaking Switzerland

While it may be interesting to confirm pizza’s monopoly across Switzerland, the story can vary widely by canton.

According to Just Eat, Pizza Margherita remains number one in Aargau, Appenzell Innerrhoden, both Basels, Bern, Glarus, Graubünden, Lucerne, Nidwalden, Schwyz, Solothurn, St. Gallen, Ticino, Thurgau, Valais, Zug and Zurich. However, the firm noted that while pizza remains ubiquitous in German-speaking Switzerland, the Romande seems to be in the mood to order other items.

For instance, the residents of Jura and Vaud are clearly fans of Taco Tuesday, with the Mexican delicacy found to be the most popular takeaway in both cantons. The saviour of anyone who finds themselves returning from a party at 3am - the humble kebab - is number one in Fribourg, Obwalden and Uri, while Schaffhausen prefers the pizza version of the dish.

Finally, ever striving to be different are the good people of Neuchâtel, where the topmost ordered dish is an Asian-style bowl with rice and salmon. For more information about all the latest takeaway trends across Switzerland, check out the official study.
