Pensioner accidentally buys Switzerland’s most expensive Nussgipfel

A Swiss pensioner recently ran into an unfortunate mishap when she accidentally paid 1.612 Swiss francs for a Nussgipfel, potentially making it the most expensive bakery item ever bought in Switzerland.

While known to be a country where the cost of living is higher than in most other European countries, an elderly woman recently ended up paying a little too much for a breakfast item at a bakery in Winterthur.

You may be wondering how she was charged such an excessive amount for a Nussgipfel, something that usually costs less than 5 francs. When paying for the gipfel with her card, the woman entered her PIN into the card machine, but she was really authorising quite a large tip for such a small item.

The majority of Switzerland still prefers to tip in cash

Two weeks later, the woman was checking her bank statements and realised the huge error. After speaking with the bakery, it turned out the payment never actually reached their bank account due to a technical error with the payment system, reports Blue News.

The lesson learned after all of this? The elderly woman says she will return to paying in cash, a payment method still largely preferred across Switzerland. 

According to a Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) study, 69 percent of people would rather tip in cash. “I sometimes find card payments a bit overwhelming,” the woman told reporters.
