After being given star accolades by both the Gault Millau and Michelin guides, one restaurant in Basel has now received a trilogy of high praise. The Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl has been named the best restaurant in the world by the famous La Liste restaurant guide.

La Liste: The world's restaurant guide

Released every year, the French restaurant guide La Liste analyses tens of thousands of restaurants around the world to find the best of the very best. Unlike the Gault Millau and Michelin guides - which use overt and undercover restaurant critics to rank restaurants - La Liste uses over 600 guides, culinary and critical reviews and millions of online ratings to rank each restaurant out of 100.

The best 1.000 of the bunch are then ranked and published, creating the ultimate global food guide - in the event of a tied score, the guide chooses the winner. For 2024, Japan was the country with the most top restaurants at 126, followed by the United States (114), France (111) and China (109).

Cheval Blanc in Basel named the best restaurant on Earth

However, for the 2025 guide, the title of best restaurant in the world went to the Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl. The restaurant, attached to the Swiss Deluxe Hotel Les Trois Rois in Basel, scored an amazing 99,5 points out of 100, cementing its position at the top of the list.

Cheval Blanc was joined by top eateries from France, the United Kingdom, France, the United States and Germany at the summit of the ranking. You have to go a little further down the order to find the next Swiss restaurant, with Schloss Schauenstein in Canton Graubünden being given a score of 98.

"Not bad" says head of the world's top eatery

"That's not bad for our little place…That shows that we're doing our job right," Peter Knogl told Gault Millau. The chef, originally from Bavaria, has already been awarded 19 out of 20 Gault Millau points for 2024, and runs one of four Swiss restaurants which sport three Michelin stars.

Diners at the Cheval Blanc can expect classic French cuisine cooked to perfection, with a few Asiatic twists along the way. Like other top restaurants in Switzerland, the menu also pays particular heed to what can be freshly brought in from the local area.

Best restaurants in the world for 2025

In all, here are the top 10 restaurants for 2025, according to La Liste:

  1. Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl (Basel, Switzerland)
  2. Guy Savoy (Paris, France)
  3. LEnclume - Simon Rogan (Grange-over-Sands, United Kingdom)
  4. La Vagye d’Or - Cheval Blanc St-Tropez (Saint-Tropez, France)
  5. Le Bernardin (New York, United States)
  6. Lung King Heen (Hong Kong, China)
  7. Matsukawa (Minato-ku, Japan)
  8. Schwarzwaldstube (Baisersbronn, Germany)
  9. SingleThread (Healdsburg, United States)
  10. Atelier Moessmer Norbert Niederkofler (Brunico, Italy)
