What were the most popular baby names in Switzerland in 2024?

The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) has released a list of the most popular baby names in Switzerland in 2024. Noah continues its reign as the most popular boys’ name, while Emma replaced Mia as the top girls’ name.

Noah wins again as the top name for boys in Switzerland in 2024

The most popular boys’ name in 2024 in Switzerland was Noah, with 511 babies taking the name. Second and third place saw no movement in the ranking compared to last year, with Liam and Matteo remaining in second and third place, respectively.  

In the French-speaking cantons of Switzerland, Gabriel came out top, followed by Noah, and then Liam. The Italian-speaking region saw a completely different top three: Leonardo was most popular, followed by Enea and Tommaso.

Emma replaces Mia as the most popular girls’ name in Switzerland

Emma returned to the top of the list as the most popular girls’ name in Switzerland, overtaking Mia in second and Sofia in third. Emma has remained a popular name among families for at least the past ten years, taking top place in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018, and 2022.

Emma stems from the Germanic word Ermen, meaning universal or whole (according to the website Ancestry). The name was used 377 times to register new babies in 2024, compared to Mia, which was used 367 times, and Sofia, which was used 321 times.

Interestingly, in the German-speaking parts of the country, Mia came out top, followed by Emilia, and then Emma. In French-speaking Switzerland Emma, Olivia, and Eva took the top spots. Among the Italian speakers, Aurora took first place, followed by Sofia in second and Ginevra in third.
