Newsweek and Statista reveal world’s best hospitals

Newsweek and global data platform Statista have collaborated to rank the best hospitals in the world in 2026. For the eighth year in a row, the organisations have reviewed 2.500 hospitals in 32 countries globally. 

The World’s Best Hospitals 2026 ranking is based on four data sources:

• Hospital quality metrics (e.g. hygiene measures, number of patients per doctor or nurse)
• Hospital recommendations from peers (based on surveys of doctors and health care professionals globally)
• Patient experience (based on patient experience survey results, e.g. satisfaction with medical care)
• Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) implementation survey (conducted by Newsweek and Statista in 2025)

Hospital scores were awarded based on the four data sources and, because each country measures differing data points, can only be compared within the same country.

University Hospital Zurich named 9th best globally

The top three best hospitals in the world are all in North America, with Mayo Clinic - Rochester, in Minnesota, taking the top spot. This is followed by University Health Network - Toronto General Hospital, in Canada, and Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, taking second and third place, respectively. 

The University Hospital Zurich (Universitätsspital Zürich) ranked among the top 10 hospitals in the world, taking ninth place.

According to Newsweek, the hospital ranking can help provide “dependable guidance on where to find high-quality medical care” as “clear information can help [patients] pursue the best possible health outcomes”. Particularly when the number of hospitals worldwide has almost reached 216.500 in 2026.
