With the deadline for filing your next tax return now approaching, a new study from Watson has revealed which residents of Canton Zurich will be better (or worse) off financially this year. Here are the 27 winners, and 27 losers when it comes to taxes in 2025.

Tax changes in Canton Zurich for 2025

For 2025, 27 different municipalities in Canton Zurich have announced that they will be cutting local taxes, four more than in 2024. However, this will be equalled by the 27 towns and districts that will be hiking rates in the next 12 months, 15 more than in 2024.

Most of the changes will see a person with an average Swiss salary pay a little more or a little less than last year. However, a handful of local communities are planning more radical changes.

Towns in Zurich set to hike local taxes this year

When it comes to paying taxes in 2025, as it currently stands the biggest losers are in Thalheim and Dinhard. Compared to tax rates in 2024, the rate charged on earnings in 2025 will increase by 7 percentage points, amounting to an increase of around 231 francs more tax for someone on the median Swiss salary (approx 80.000 francs a year).

However, though it hasn’t been confirmed, the two towns north of Winterthur could be eclipsed by Hinwil, which is provisionally planning a tax hike of 10 percentage points. The hike was originally designed to help pay for rising costs in the local school system, but the plans were rejected by locals in 2024. The local council now has until March to create a new budget.

Despite announcing a 1 percentage point cut on its tax rate, Maschwanden remains the town with the highest local taxes in Canton Zurich. There, a single person with an annual salary of 80.000 francs pays a total tax rate of 21,2 percent.

Silver Coast town offers the biggest tax cut in Zurich

By contrast, the residents of Thalwil have the most to celebrate this tax season, with their rates set to fall by 5 percentage points compared to 2024. The decision means that more areas of the “Silver Coast” of Lake Zurich are slowly catching up with the Gold Coast when it comes to low taxes.

That said, Kilchberg on the western coast remains the town with the lowest local taxes in the canton. In the town, singles earning 80.000 francs a year are charged a tax rate of 16,5 percent.

How will local taxes in Zurich change in 2025?

In all, here are all the towns in Canton Zurich planning tax rises in 2025:

  • 10-percentage-point rise: Hinwil (TBC)
  • 7-percentage-point rise: Thalheim an der Thur, Dinhard
  • 6-percentage-point rise: Rickenbach
  • 5-percentage-point rise: Hagenbuch
  • 4-percentage-point rise: Kleinandelfingen, Bülach, Weiningen
  • 3-percentage-point rise: Illnau-Effretikon, Schwerzenbach, Grüningen
  • 2-percentage-point rise: Marthalen, Ellikon an der Thur, Geroldswil, Oetwil an der Limmat, Elgg, Fehraltorf, Greifensee
  • 1-percentage-point rise: Seuzach, Dägerlen, Hettlingen, Henggart, Stallikon, Wettswil am Albis

By contrast, here are all the towns planning tax cuts for the 2025 tax season:

  • 5-percentage-point cut: Thalwil
  • 4-percentage-point cut: Steinmaur, Brütten, Oberrieden
  • 3-percentage-point cut: Neftenbach, Oberweningen, Kloten, Elsau
  • 2-percentage-point cut: Rheinau, Truttikon, Dättlikon, Hüttikon, Dänikon, Dietikon, Wallisellen, Seegräben, Männedorf, Zumikon, Aeugst am Albis, Obfelden, Ottenbach, Uitikon
  • 1-percentage-point cut: Regensberg, Dällikon, Regensdorf, Wädenswil, Maschwanden
