The new Henley Passport Index for 2022 has ranked the Swiss passport as the joint-seventh-best in the world. The Swiss passport allows for travel to 186 countries around the world without a pre-approved visa, making it one of the world’s best.

Henley Passport Index for 2022

The Henley Passport Index is an annual survey that analyses 199 passports from around the world and determines how many countries they allow you to enter “visa-free”. Each country that allows visa-free travel corresponds to one point on the index, an indicator of how free each passport holder is to travel the world as they please.

“Visa-free” in this case refers to a country that either does not require a visa, or ones where a visa can be obtained upon arrival, such as a tourist visa or electronic form. The index only takes visas into account and not COVID testing requirements or quarantine periods.

Swiss passport retains seventh place

Switzerland has kept its position as the joint-seventh most valuable passport in the world, after moving from sixth to seventh in 2020. Switzerland earned the same score as last year, with 186 points.

The score means Swiss citizens, along with Belgians, New Zealanders, Norwegians, Brits and Americans, can visit 186 countries around the world without a pre-approved visa. Switzerland was only one point behind fourth and only six points behind first place, which was won by Japan and Singapore.
