Passengers heading to or from Zurich Airport will face significant disruption this weekend, as Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) carries out major repairs to the line. Here’s what travellers need to know.
From 10pm on Friday, March 21 until 5am on Monday, March 24, rail services between Swiss cities and Zurich Airport will be heavily disrupted. SBB confirmed that major renovations will be carried out on one kilometre of track between the airport and the town of Bassersdorf.
The works will result in diversions, cancellations and changes to the timetable, affecting journeys to Zurich Airport and other destinations on routes that use the same line.
For the duration of the works, the IC5 from Lausanne and Zurich to St. Gallen, and the EuroCity service from Zurich to Munich will be diverted and will therefore not stop at Zurich Airport. In the reverse direction, the IC8 from Romanshorn to Brig via Zurich HB will also be diverted.
In terms of regional services, the S24 between Zug and Winterthur via Zurich will be diverted in both directions for the duration of the work. Therefore, the train will not stop at Zurich Airport or Bassersdorf.
Finally, the S7 between Kloten and Winterthur will be completely cancelled from 8pm on March 22 to the end of construction work on March 24. Replacement buses will be used to operate the route.
Luckily for those jetting off on holiday this weekend, unlike previous construction works at Zurich Airport, many train services will be running as normal. From Zurich, IC1, IC81, IR13, IR36, IR75 and the S2 and S16 will stop at the airport. The tram network will also remain unaffected.
Nevertheless, SBB still advised customers to regularly check the status of their trains. Travellers should also consult the SBB website and app, as some trains may run on a different schedule than usual.
